Spartan Commuter Organization Updates

I have been very busy these last few days....but that's a good thing! The downfall is I haven't been able to post to our blog and that's gotta change!! I am going to try to write at least 1 post a week! But I definitely need your feedback! Let me know what you would like me to write about, if there is anything you would like me to address or share. Remember this blog is here for YOU! As a fellow commuter, I want to help (us) make the best out of our experience at UT! So comment to your heart's content, I look forward to reading your inputs!  :)

Okay now for some updates:

I met with Megan Frisque, the Assistant Director of Civic Engagement and a fellow commuter student, Marcus Sandoval, earlier this week in regards to the Student Commuter Organization (SCO) and where it stands. She explained that the SCO will now stand alone as a separate organization and will no longer be part of the Student Government. Which means we will be starting with a clean slate! That is great news because with everyone's feedback we can build up the SCO so that it benefits commuters the most!! If anyone has ideas and/or suggestions, please contact me at mherrera.mosli@ut.edu We definitely want to hear from all of you!

Our Facebook Group Page is up! This will  be a great way to stay in the know of what is going on with the SCO. You can also start discussion topics and meet other commuters on our page. I will be uploading helpful links to the group page, so stay tuned. :) Click on the image below and join the group today!

Have a great week!

Two Film Events on Campus-Monday 9.21.09

As one of the requirements for my major (International & Cultural Studies) I am taking World Cinema (COM-261) this semester. So far the course is pretty good. I get to see some classic films that I probably would never see otherwise. I apologize about the short notice but here are some links that my instructor sent me today for this week's upcoming events at UT.
The events seem interesting not only for communication majors but for anyone interested in films. I am especially looking forward to the Q&A with Hollywood Movie editor, Leslie Webb (UT alumna '98) at the Reeves Theater from 4-6pm.
Her most recent works include:

Shortly after, there will be a screening of "The Revolution will not be televised"

Click on the image above for more event information.

Contacts for both events are Tom Garrett/JP Busche. Hope to see you there.

Happy Monday!

Textbooks- Why buy?

Who wants to pay a wad of cash for textbooks? Not yours truly. I’m Chegging, baby.

Seriously, go to Chegg.com where you can rent textbooks rather than buy them. You’ll save between 65%-85%. Yes, I’m serious.

Just search for the books you need and order. Chegg ships them to you super fast and when your term ends you just ship them back for free. And guess what? They plant a tree for every book that’s rented. Pretty cool.

BUT – make sure you use this special promo code CC100334. You’ll get an extra 5% off your order. Enough said…

Back to classes...don't forget your Spartan card!

Hope everyone had a relaxing Labor day weekend! If your case is like mine, much of that relaxing time was spent on reading & homework! :( But it's all good! Have to keep my goals in mind:
NO PROCRASTINATION! Let's see how I do this semester, I haven't had much success before!
Well, over the weekend, an incident occurred to a friend (and fellow commuter) and it brought something to my attention. Though some of you may be aware, it doesn't hurt to share the info. It relates to our Spartan I.D. card. When I received my card, since I do not have a meal plan and obviously I do not live on campus, I stuck the card in my wallet and haven't seen it since orientation. Well, it seems that card is very important and comes in handy for us commuters! You see, my friend arrived on campus early in the morning and realized that the building she needed to access was locked. After a while, she became concerned that after driving all the way to campus, she would have to return with nothing accomplished. She was finally able to speak to her instructor and soon discovered that all students at UT can access locked buildings by swiping their Spartan ID cards in an area located next to the building. She had no knowledge of this and did not recall anyone explaining this to her during orientation. It was also news to me! I am sure she may have felt a little silly and/or frustrated because of her wasted time, but the up side of it is that her experience helps other students (like me!) know about this and avoid having to go through the same thing! A big thanks to her!

I even found more uses for the Spartan ID card! Here is a link on UT's website with more information: http://www.ut.edu/detail.aspx?id=306&terms=spartan+card&fragment=&SearchType=&terms=spartan%20card

I guess we should never leave home without it! (Corny, I know...but I couldn't help myself!) =)

Have a great week!
